LITERATURE AS AN EMPOWERING INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL IN THE ADULT ESL CLASSROOM

Сацук Дариус

Annotation

Presenting language through literature can be an effective tool in teaching English to second language learners, even to those with limited or no prior exposure. Integration between literature and language should be viewed as reciprocal between the two, as the knowledge of how language works facilitates understanding literature, and, literature, on the other hand, serves as an ideal language resource. Incorporating all skills while discussing a literary work is a prerequisite for avoiding monotony, the factor that commonly prevents students from reaching for literary texts. Balancing multiple language skills in ESL literature classes might decrease students’ anxiety and force them to produce and learn English actively.

Key words
